The company was founded by Murray Hogarth on November 29, 1956 on Upper James Street in Hamilton, Ontario.
The chain is an independent franchise, and has locations in many cities and towns in Southern Ontario (Southwestern Ontario and South Central), Central Ontario and Eastern Ontario. The network is found along the 400 series highways (401, 400 and QEW),
Like its larger and older competitor Canadian Tire, the company offers its own community currency, in the form of "Bonus Bucks", similar to Canadian Tire Money.
The front feature the Pioneer logo and the words "Bonus Bucks". The back had a sketch of the a Pioneer station.

Unlike Canadian Tire money, Bonus Bucks had expiry dates and were printed in English only. The paper based coupons are now replaced with a members card program with Bonus Bucks collected using the card instead.
